For six months, Connex Credit Union will be working closely with five participants to see who can become the most fiscally fit to win a $3,000 grand prize. Each participant has been paired with a Connex Financial Advocate who will offer real-world, practical advice on how to reduce debt, build savings, and many other helpful financial tips and advice. Connex received over 100 applications for the fourth annual ConneXfactor competition! Below is our update on Nina W.
Nina W.: Getting Financially and Physically Fit
Coach: Tameeka Lockwood, New Haven Branch Manager
Nina is working very hard to make sure she is meeting her monthly savings goals while also paying down debt. She had run into an unexpected expense; her car needed front and rear brakes. Normally that would’ve caused a panic, however she was focused on the financial plan we had created. Fortunately, Nina had set up a Poshmark account (a digital marketplace where you can buy and sell fashionable items) and had made $88 which she used to pay for her brake pads. The other great part is that a friend of hers put the brakes on which saved her a lot of money. She is a part-time Uber driver and could not drive her car until the brakes were fixed so it was great that she had a second stream of income with Poshmark. Before joining the competition, Nina would have relied on her credit card for something like this, but she is thinking more strategically now. In general, she has been resisting the urge to use her credit card.
Nina is also cutting costs by cutting her own grass, rather than paying someone else to do it. She is also winning big by getting some exercise as well as saving money!
Nina is determined and is coming up with ways to make money now so she can relax a little when the weather isn’t so nice. In addition, her determination not to use the credit card is awesome as she is truly focused on changing her spending habits.
