For the next five months, Connex Credit Union will be working closely with five participants to see who can become the most fiscally fit to win a $3,000 grand prize. Each participant has been paired with a Connex Financial Advocate who will offer real-world, practical advice on how to reduce debt, build savings, and many other helpful financial tips and advice. Connex received over 140 applications for the second annual ConneXfactor competition! Below is our September update on Nick M.

Nick M.: Curbing Shopping Impulses

Coach: Michelle Panzo, Orange Assistant Branch Manager

As the end of Connexfactor draws near, I have been listening and observing Nick closely.  I am amazed at his progress and how far he has come!  I never doubted he would be committed to the competition, but his changes have even surprised him.  One big change he has made are with his spending habits.  He realizes more than a few of his purchases in the past were extreme and nick mimpulsive.  It’s no secret that he has “champagne taste” and likes nice things, but now more of a thought process happens before he parts with his money.  He now does his due diligence when shopping to find the best deals for his budget, and saves for those more expensive items he really wants.

The irony is that by the time he does have the money saved for those purchases, he is finding that he doesn’t want to spend the money he worked so hard to accumulate.  This is a huge change in itself!

Nick’s participation in ConneXfactor has indeed been a big “factor” in these lifelong changes he’s making and it’s only the beginning.  As he matures, graduates from college, and eventually begins a career – he knows the skills he has learned through this challenge will stay with him forever.  He is excited about his accomplishments, confident in his newly acquired skills, and thinking about being on his own after the competition is done.

Nick has asked if we can still meet when this is over. I told him he is not getting rid of me that easily, especially since I have begun working with his mother to help her change her financial future. This is something Nick and I will be working on together – to help his mother succeed like he has these past few months! – Michelle Panzo, Orange Assistant Branch Manager
