For the next five months, Connex Credit Union will be working closely with five participants to see who can become the most fiscally fit to win a $3,000 grand prize. Each participant has been paired with a Connex Financial Advocate who will offer real-world, practical advice on how to reduce debt, build savings, and many other helpful financial tips and advice. Connex received over 140 applications for the second annual ConneXfactor competition! Below is our fifth update on Stephanie S.

Stephanie S.: Finding cost-friendly alternatives

Coach: Hala Urban, Orange Branch Manager

It seems “Adversity” has become Stephanie’s first name.  But she has found a way to make “Conquered” her middle name.

Even with the unexpected challenges, Stephanie focused to stay committed to the program designed by her ConneXfactor coach.  She recently had to purchase tires for her car because of two nails and worn treads.  Stephanie took to the internet to find and research how to purchase tires and what would be the best tires for a strained budget. She did comparison shopping first at local tire stephanieretail stores.  She then looked at tiretrak.com to find the best tire for the best price with the same quality as the tires that came with the car.  She took that research to the tire dealers as asked them to beat the price which they did as well as gave her a $60 rebate.  By doing her homework and asking for discounts, Stephanie saved herself $230 from what was originally quoted.

The next adversity she had to overcome was trying to get her son from Boston to Connecticut for several doctor appointments for a wrist injury.  Usually, Stephanie would purchase a train ticket for $106 or $54, but she discovered it is cheaper if he could take a chartered bus.  So she purchased him a round trip ticket for $31.  He was still able to make his appointments in time and she saved money.

Life won’t always go the way we want it to.  But when it comes to it, some of us complain about it and some tackle the problem and move on.  Instead of Stephanie complaining about how things could have been, she reflects on everything she has learned from this challenge.  Then she finds the best solution and moves forward.

Stephanie tries to incorporate the skills that she is learning from this challenge to keep her on target.  She is one payment away from paying off another credit card in September and has built up her savings account. – Hala Urban, Orange Branch Manager
